The Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) can become injured causing what’s called temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD). When involved in an auto accident, your body takes upon tremendous forces especially in the neck region. It has been found that 1/3 of all whiplash injuries also have TMD. The injuries occur typically with a shearing effect that causes significant stresses to the joint, muscles and ligaments supporting the region.
Symptoms of TMD may include:
- Pain and tenderness at the joint or in front of the ear. The pain typically occurs upon movement of the joint as well.
- Popping or clicking of the joint
- Pain when eating, especially chewy foods
- Headaches
- Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
- Dizziness
