Thoracic outlet syndrome is a painful condition mostly manifesting in the upper portion of the body including the shoulders, neck, arms, and hands. The condition occurs when there is compression of the nerves, arteries, or veins in the passageway from the lower neck to the upper portion of the arm. Pain can be constant or intermittent. It can also be a burning pain, sharp & stabbing, or an aching pain. Unfortunately, a whiplash type injury or other shearing types of injury that can occur following an auto accident, can often cause a condition of this magnitude.
The varying aspects of this condition are why it’s important to have a thorough evaluation to determine the cause of the pain. There are 3 main types and causes of thoracic outlet syndrome: neurogenic, venous, and arterial. Due to the different types, there can be many different symptoms as well: swelling, pain, loss of color in the arm, coldness, etc.
