HEAT AND THE HEART
Yes, it’s HOT outside!! Today is the longest day of the year, summer solstice. What does that mean for your heart and for your health?
ACUPUNCTURE
gives us some answers and we have some SUMMER HEALTH TIPS below!
Summer: The Fire Element
Summer’s brightness illuminates both our inner being and external world, so joy seems to surround us. It is also HOT outside!! Therefore it is no coincidence that traditional Acupuncture relates summer to the Fire element. This season is the time of warmth, activity, growth, movement and building relationships.
A BALANCED body is a HEALTHY body!!
So when Acupuncture speaks of imbalances in the Fire element, symptoms associated with disturbance to or diminishing levels of physical and mental/emotional energy. Physical indicators include:
- Cardiac pain, palpitations or irregular heartbeat
- Lack of or excessive perspiration
- High or low blood pressure
- Circulatory problems, fainting
- Rashes, hives, red skin eruptions
- Loss of voice, speech problems
- Abdominal pain
- Hormonal imbalances, hot flushes
- Metabolism and thyroid issues
- Immune deficiency and other endocrine disorders.
- Mental/emotional energy disruptions include:
- Sleep disturbances: insomnia or restlessness
- Anxiety and agitation
- Memory loss
- Fatigue, depression, and feeling disconnected.
Keeping balance within your nerve and energy systems is the premise of Chiropractic Acupuncture. Our state of the art ACUGRAPH system measures your current state to determine if your body is in balance or would benefit from a treatment to ensure a statute of health and healing.
HOW DOES ACUPUNCTURE WORK?
There are many different methods of treatment, and we prefer NEEDLE-LESS Acupuncture! A recent Acupuncture Journal had some explanations on how acupuncture really works. Here’s the basics:
We all have neuromodulators — natural opioid peptides — running through our bodies. Acupuncture releases four of them during treatment which is why acupuncture helps:
- Create a feeling calm and peacefulness
- Relieves pain
- stops dysfunctional muscle function, starts vasodilation to the area, and begins healing.
- Brings the body back to balance. Homeostasis, which is self healing and self regulating.

SUMMER HEALTH TIPS:
UPDATE YOUR SLEEP SCHEDULE. Aligning your sleep schedule with seasonal changes will help you have the most energy throughout your day. In the summer, take advantage of the long days by rising early, napping in the afternoon, and staying up later. This practice will help keep balance within your circadian rhythm AND get the benefits of being in the sun before the rays get too HOT and strong.
SUMMER NUTRITION: Summer months, our diet should be light, cooling, brightly colored, full of nutrients, and hydrating. Good options include: apricot, bananas, apples, lettuce, cantaloupe, watermelon, strawberries, tomatoes, citrus, peaches, cucumber, zucchini, asparagus, and mint. These foods are plentiful this time of year, so be sure to incorporate them into your diet on a regular basis to offset the summer heat. It is best to stay away from heavy, greasy, and fried foods this time of year.
HYDRATE! Balancing fire with water is essential to staying healthy in the summer. Whatever your body weight is, divide by 2. This is the number of ounces of water to drink per day.
MOVEMENT: cardio is especially good this time of year. Some beautiful walks in the morning or evening before the heat of the day can help keep your health balanced during this season.
CALM: Refrain from anger and keep calm/even tempered.
