Today we’re going to talk about a very important topic, What Causes Pain and Disease? Find it & Eliminate it!
Hi, Dr. James. How are you today?
Dr. Dennis James, Keller Chiropractor: I’m going great, Liz. How are you?
RC: I’m great. Thanks for joining me. How does a chiropractor help to determine the cause of someone’s pain?
Dr. Dennis James, Keller Chiropractor: Well you know, first and foremost we really don’t search for the pain. We actually search for the problem. It’s kind of a backward state than what a lot of people tend to do. If we search for pain, we can search for unending things that start to happen as opposed if we get to the source of the problem and improve the function, that’s actually going to eliminate the pain. We take a global aspect. We take a look at range of motion, we take a look at palpation. We do x-rays in our office. We also do an advanced neurological testing as well that allows us to look at a couple different components. We have this sensory component. We know there is pain already and that’s about 10% of that nervous system but we can also analyze the motor component that controls all the patient’s movements. Also the autonomic portion that controls different glands and organs within the system. When we can take a big global picture, we can not only just treat pain and disease and things of that nature, we can actually restore health and function. As we do, we tend to see the pain and disease go away.
RC: Can a chiropractor identify the causes of some diseases?
Dr. Dennis James, Keller Chiropractor: Absolutely. When you’re starting to restore that function, there are a lot of different things that can happen. Number one, you have physical type of traumas. Say somebody is in an auto accident and you already know the cause of that. If somebody is starting to get better with what you’re treating and you find that when they wake up in the morning that’s the only thing that’s starting to cause the pain again. You see a repetitive pattern or a text neck. There’s even emotional stresses that tend to happen. You can get involved with somebody as they’re getting better and you say, “I see a pattern in which every time this happens at work or this type of family event, this is what’s causing the pain to get worse.” You correlate those things together and as you do, you’re able to correct those things along the way to not only fix the problem but able to get back to the original cause that caused the problem so that it doesn’t have to keep returning down the road for them.
RC: What are the most effective chiropractic treatments used to alleviate back and neck pain?
Dr. Dennis James, Keller Chiropractor: That’s a great question. I truly believe that most all chiropractic treatments are very effective. With that being said, we specialize in something that’s very unique and very different. It’s something we do and it’s more of a very gentle, laying down-type technique. There’s not any twisting and turning. The big reason for that is that I was adjusted as I was growing up. I was adjusted by a great chiropractor. I just didn’t like getting adjusted that way, with the twisting and turning and things of that nature. We actually switched it up a little bit and I saw it also in teachers that I was very, very blessed to have, to where we could do it in a much more gentle way. I really felt called to treat families, a lot of kids, a lot of infants, things of that nature. To do that, I wanted them to be able to feel comfortable, to come back, to want to stay healthy and to move forward in that aspect. One of the coolest things we’ve seen is now kids just run up and they want to be a part of that because it’s so gentle.
They also know that they’re getting better, they’re actually achieving health to different states that they didn’t seem possible so they want to do those different types of things. Even better is we tend to treat some adults as well that had some treatments before, people that tend to pop their back a lot or pop their neck a lot on their own. There’s hypermobility there. You actually have to do a little bit less and be more specific in those areas to allow that to stabilize, to get it to the point that the person doesn’t feel they need to do that anymore.
RC: Can acupuncture provide pain relief, both temporarily and long-term?
Dr. Dennis James, Keller Chiropractor: Oh, absolutely. Acupuncture is something that we specialize within our office and we combine it in a lot with that very gentle treatment that we do. Chiropractic and acupuncture basically are a very similar modality that we work together with. A healing regimen so to speak. The number one goal for it is to restore the neurological energy function of the body and to keep it balanced. As we work those things together it’s not a matter of short-term or long-term alleviation of pain. It’s about restoration of function and when we restore that function, that pain goes away because that pain was an indicator that there was a problem. One of the issues is that some people tend to take medication a little bit too early. There are stages where we need it and we’re very aware of that. If we’re able to see that pain and use it as a driving force, as a signal so to speak that says, “Something’s not right”, instead of covering up we can search for what that is. We can fix it naturally and now you know that the quality of life that you have as you move forward in 10, 20, 30 years is going to be significantly better.
RC: Lastly, with regular chiropractic care, is it possible to prevent pain and lower the risk of disease?
Dr. Dennis James, Keller Chiropractor: Absolutely. When you take a look at the concept of some of the most common people that we treat saying, “Hey, I was bending over. I was tying my shoe and my back just went out.” They can’t believe that just tying their shoe made their back go out. The issue is very similar to the concept of the iceberg under the water so to speak. When that iceberg starts to form you can’t see it until it starts to come up above the water and then it starts to creep up. Symptoms and pain are the exact same way. What happens is more often than car accidents and things of that nature, the issues come from repetitive small traumas over a period of time that build up into something bigger and then it starts to cross that threshold. As it crosses the threshold, we start to see that. Anytime we can get regular treatments on there to take the stress off the spine so to speak, through the chiropractic adjustment. When we do that we’re able to stay ahead of that, not allow it to build up, so they don’t have their future issues down the road.
RC: Well, thank you Dr. James. We know you’re extremely busy so I just want to thank you for your time and help today.
